Proper use and maintenance of brakes

The braking system of a car is vital for the safety of passengers and other road users, as they undertake to immobilize the vehicle.
Proper use and maintenance is required by the owner.
The distance that a car will brake depends on many factors, such as the condition of the brakes (discs, pads) and tires, the quality of the road, the weather conditions.

Proper use of the brakes:

  • The first thing we must always observe is the safety distances and to avoid braking at the last moment, except of course in cases of emergency braking.
  • When driving on slippery roads we reduce the speed of our car and increase the distances from the vehicles in front. It is very important never to "stroke" the brake, leaving the foot constantly on the pedal. Permanent braking results in overheating of the brakes and longer brake pedal travel. The correct way is intermittent braking.
  • On downhills the brakes load and heat up quickly. When traveling on steep and continuous slopes we reduce speed and choose a smaller gear ratio to take advantage of the engine braking capacity by unloading the brakes.
  • When driving with wet brake discs (heavy rain, running water, after washing the car) the brakes must first be depressed to dry. On some models this process is done automatically. We never let the car roll with the engine off because the servo brake does not work, which means that the brakes do not catch.
  • When the brakes are hot, be careful not to pass through stagnant water because there is a possibility that the discs will be crooked.
  • New pads or discs must be paved for the first few miles to ensure proper performance.

Proper brake maintenance:

  • We change the brake fluids every two years because steam bubbles may have formed, affecting their performance. It is advisable to regularly check the brake fluid level in the relevant container.
  • The pads are changed more often when the car is driven in the city or we do sports driving. It is advisable to replace them before the relevant light on the instrument panel lights up.
